President HSM’s Betrayal: National Sovereignty, Territorial Integrity, and Unity
April 14th, 2025 Ref: 002/04/14/2025
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s recent actions have raised serious concerns about his commitment to Somalia’s national unity and territorial integrity. During a highly symbolic visit to Las Anod, the seat of the SSC-Khatumo administration by the Prime Minister and members of his cabinet, the President’s statements appeared to undermine his own Prime Minister and cabinet members, who were there to affirm a unified national stance against secessionist tendencies and claims. By offering what seemed to be appeasement toward the secessionist administration in Hargeisa and simultaneously snubbing the pro-unionist SSC-Khatumo group, the President not only contradicted the intended message of unity but also diminished the credibility and authority of his executive team. This sent a signal that internal coherence and consistency within the federal leadership is lacking, especially on matters as crucial as territorial integrity and national unity.
Such actions do more than just confuse the public or embolden separatists; they erode the trust that unionist communities, such as the people of SSC-Khatumo, place in the federal government. When leaders speak ambiguously, especially in such visible and public way, it invites skepticism about the sincerity and long-term vision of federal policy. At a time when clarity and commitment are needed, President Hassan Sheikh chose a path of mixed signals, weaking not just the government’s internal cohesion but also its standing with communities that have resisted fragmentation. This isn’t a mere political miscalculation; it’s a dangerous form of political undercutting that could deepen divides rather than heal them.
Building a basic trust to reunite the fragmented Somali society requires consistent and sincerely leadership efforts. However, President Hassan Sheikh’s actions have undermined these efforts, eroding hope for consolidation all parts of the society and government institutions, including Federal Member States, civil society organizations, and national political figures. This approach would subsequently lead the nation into catastrophic turmoil.
